Description of the project:Our first mini project was called “The political cartoon project”.This was a project with two classes involved, humanities and art. For the humanities portion we had to pick a topic that doesn’t follow what the US Declaration of Independence. For art we had to draw our issue that we picked and how it’s affecting modern day and to raise awareness to the problem.
A habit of heart I grew in was perspective because I learned to look at others opinions and not just focus on my own. I learned to not just judge someone or look at them any differently just because of the way they look at an issue. When I say this I am not just talking about my topic but overall with any issue someone brings up it’s always good to have an open mind about it. Throughout this project another thing I learned was when you are discussing with someone you don’t always have to be right if everybody thought the same way and viewed everything the same, what would be so special about opinions.
A habit of heart I struggled in was refinement. It was especially hard for me because when it comes to art I am the worst at drawing and I am pretty picky and a perfectionist when it comes to the way things are organized and how they look. Thankfully Mr.Joshua and Mr.Phil were there to give me ideas for what to add to make it have more meaning and make the audience think, which was what we were aiming for. I made several drafts because I thought I could do better but it would always turn out with me just giving up. Drawing my final draft was very hard for me because there were times where I was not satisfied with what I was drawing and simply wanted give up,but I wanted the drawing to be all me so I did it all myself.
Description of the process to make a political cartoon:First in the very beginning we read the “US Declaration of Independence 4th of July, 1776” and the purpose of reading that was to find in the article how we are not following it or living up to what it says. Then we had to chose an issue that is currently happening in the U.S so some of the topics that other people chose were police brutality, immigration, gay rights etc. It was a long process for me to chose my final topic because I couldn’t decide and none of them cought my attention, but finally I chose the right one for me and that one that brought my attention which was Human Trafficking. Next we had to do some research so we can know some statistics and be experts of our topic. We all started with a first draft of our political cartoon and we just sketched what we had in mind but quickly our drawings grew and became powerful making a statement.Mr.Joshua and Mr.Phil taught us all how to do this technique called hatching they said it makes it look like a it came out of a newspaper so we did it,and they were right it looked more professional and detailed.
My biggest takeaway from the project was the fact that it is important for teenagers like us to know about politics. It is important for teens to know about politics so that we can be informed and updated with some of the current events that are happening all around us. You can see how the past events are similar tro some current events, for example the racism that happened during the holocaust and the racism that is happening today are very similar and history is repeating itself. I feel like it also should just become a habit to be intrested in the news because we are the future.
