At first my topic was mental illness, a pretty broad topic that wasn’t specific enough, so later on I chose bipolar disorder. The reason I chose bipolar disorder was because if I’m not mistaken no one else was doing that topic and because I didn’t know a lot about bipolar disorder and wanted to get to know more about it. The main message we are trying to communicate in our zine is trying to reduce the stigma about brain health you see this through a lot of our synopsis included in the zine stating that mental illness should be talked about more. Another message that was sent through our zine is healthy coping mechanisms, we included a page suggesting easy ways to relax. We found it important to include the healthy coping mechanisms page because it’s simple stuff that can make a difference and because not everybody has access to a therapist for example.
Throughout the project each group had the assignment of interviewing a social brain health advocate. My group chose to interview the guest speaker we had in our class from the program manager from NAMI Organization San Diego. We thought she was a good fit for the interview because we wanted to focus on the stigma and NAMI talks to high school students to hopefully decrease the stigma in mental illness’. We wanted to know some tips and the work that NAMI did to reduce the stigma in mental illness to apply it to our zine. The information we got from the interview was very helpful and we were able to relate it back to our zine.
What I’m most proud of is the final products that we were able to exhibit in our exhibitions. I’m proud of everybody in my team for making awesome art pieces and zines that we could show off. I’m also proud of my team because it was us that produces the zine festival it was all our ideas that were able to make it happen. I’m also proud of my group for working together, being able to meet deadlines, and putting our best effort into our work. After this project I learned a lot about brain health because that is what our zines were about. I will take this information with me and use it to have insight of how to take care of myself and others.
What I learned about producing an event is the time and effort it requires. It was definitely so much work and stress producing an event with only the people in your team but looking back at its something I’m proud of and would have done it again. Since there is a lot of work that need to get done it encourages you to talk to your group because you need to agree what needs to get done and what people were gonna work on it. I learned that it takes everyone’s contribution to make it possible because one person can’t do it all by themselves. My overall perspective of the zine festival is good because we created a fun event I believe many people enjoyed.
