Expectations of biology before:
In the beginning I thought of it like another typical science class. My previous science class haven’t been that engaging and interesting as this year’s biology class. I think this is because biology is about the human body and that easily connects to everyone. I also think I was easily engaged because we started the year right into hands on activities like the observations of plant and the pig dissection. Before, I thought that we were going to have a ton of work, and yes I was right but that work helps you devolp your understanding for the next steps.
What "scientist" means to me:
A memorable moment when my perspective of what a scientist meant was in the more hands on moments we had during this semester. For example during the fetal pig dissection I learned that all jobs that were assigned were all as important. All jobs had the same amount of responsibility, we all depended on each other to move on. I also learned that to be a scientist we all had to start from somewhere, sometimes other people are more advanced and others aren’t as much. I personally struggled with this a lot because coming into this class I had very little prior knowledge about biology. When it came to reading the packets Ms. Nuvia gave for homework they would get confused. Fortunately, those packets are written for people like me that are beginners in the world of biology.
My growth as a scientist:
I can definetly say that this year I have learned so much about my body and the sturctures and functions of it. Before I knew mostly nothing about the human body, like when I would go to the doctors and they would talk about what I needed to get done or what was wrong with me, I wouldn't understand what they would say. But now there is a big difference because I now know what they talk about when they mention different organs. I feel very proud of how much I know now because it’s important to know about different structures and functions of your body to take care of yourself.
My biological root:
The biological connection I chose was mainly the brain which is part of the nervous system. The other systems my peers chose was the circulatory system, respiratory system, digestive system, and reproductive system. The reason I chose this system out of all of them is because in my story I talk about my thoughts and perspective changing about the inncident and the brain is in charge of developing all thoughts and emotions. I also chose the brain because the brain is the motor of your body without the brain you wouldn’t be able to do nothing, your brain is the organ that has the most responsibilities. It was important to learn about this system because for our biological root it needed to connect back to our story. I was interested in learning about how emotions and thoughts evolve because that’s what a lot of my story is about.
How I will take care of myself:
I believe it’s important to know about your body because you should know how and why your body reacts the way it does. I didn’t have this mentality until more recently when working on the project. I will take care of myself by keeping my power of forgiveness by having an open mind with everything that that comes my way. I will take care of my power by talking about the situation I faced more and hopefully empower others on my story on why I chose to take the decision of how far I’ve come to even forgive him.
Description of my painting:
My painting is of a side profile of a girl and she looks really relaxed and at peace to describe my feelings towards what happened in my story. I wanted to show that I have moved on and grew from that experience. Roots of flowers connected to the sulci of the brain to represent my thoughts and point of views changing and evolving. The reason I chose the nervous system was because I wanted to focus on the fact that a big portion of this incident is that I don’t remember it because of trauma. I also wanted to do the nervous system because I wanted to show that my beliefs and emotions towards the situation.
What I learned about the scientific process:
What I learned throughout the scientific process is that to get to your final idea you have to go through many drafts and feedback given to different drafts to make it better each time. I learned that others input on your work is important because it’s gives you an outside perspective that sometimes you don’t notice. I also learned that when the work gets hard is when you most need to push through and continue. It happened often when the work got hard and I felt like giving up but it’s in those moments when you need to persevere through it. I learned that work through a scientific process you need to be very observant, careful, patient, and perservernat.
Challenges I faced:
The challenges I encountered while trying to create my best work with my painting is working good and fast. I took a week off from school due to a trip I took and unfortunately that took away a lot of time I had to work on my painting. The time I had to paint was very little so I had to sacrifice my time and come in extra hours to get it done. It was very stressful because I wanted it to look good but I also didn’t have much time so I had to work efficiently the time I had to paint.
What I'm most proud of:
What I’m most proud of in creating my best work is the amount of classmates that were willing to help me despite them still not being done with their own painting. I really appreciated the time they took out of their own time to help me with what I needed support on. I asked a lot of people for help because I struggled with some techniques and not once did one of them hesitated to help. I’m happy of the end product of my painting because it was such a long prccess and I’m so glad it’s all done. What I’m most happy with is that I’m sincerely proud of it because there was so much time and effort put into it.
