I believe not only teens but the community is slowly revolutionizing how mental health is being talked about in the U.S. I think there are is less stigma when it comes to brain health because I’ve seen people come forward and openly talking about their mental illness and what they have done to treat it. I’ve seen this through NAMI an organization organization that advocates to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. I also feel like this project gave my peers and I an insight to brain health so after this project we know a lot more about the topic so we can hopefully diminish the stigma. A way I can apply what I learned to my personal life is reaching out to people if I notice some tendencies of a mental illness, reminding them I can support with seeking help.
I believe I have developed into a teen brain health advocate for my topic this semester because of the research paper I wrote about bipolar disorder. All students assignment was to construct a well researched paper including a counter argument and a thesis. When researching I found a lot of information for my topic I was unaware of, this helped me develop an understanding of bipolar disorder. What I would like people to know about all mental illness’ is there are many resources that are open to help with what they can.
In biology, we connected what we learned from humanities about basic and social needs to biology and neurobiology. At first I did know about the basic needs such as food, water, and shelter however, I didn’t know a lot of social needs. In biology, we established the social needs that I was unfamiliar with which are status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, and fairness. Throughout this project I learned that basic and social needs play a big role in a person’s development, and if there is a big absence of a social or basic need it could cause difficulties in a person's brain health.
