City Of Chula Vista Attorney's Office
The City of Chula Vista Attorney's Office focuses on facilitating legal services to the City in order to guide in a just and functional way. The City Attorney’s office collaborates with the City Council, all City Boards and Commissions, the City Manager, City Clerk and all City Departments to provide the clients with legal services to utilize them in City policies and to deliver City services.
I’m very excited to go to internship because it will be an experience that will be informative for me to know if going into the law field is something I would like to get into. I’m stoked to try something different and get to work on something I’m passionate and curious to know more of. A skill I would like to take out of internship is knowing how to reach out to professionals on my own, right now we are getting support from our teachers but I hope I can apply the process to my life for senior year and after high school as well. |
The first day I arrived I received this in our weekly meetings held on Monday’s. This is some insight into what the Attorney’s office looked like in the month of May. The day they passed the calendar they were discussing some of the things written down and what they would do to prepare. During the discussion, my mentor Glen offered me to shadow some of the meetings or events that I was interested in going.

Towards the end of internship, Eva and I got the opportunity to catch up who was interning next door at the City of Chula Vista Office of Sustainability. Although we were in the same buildings we weren’t in the same department which made us not see each other. However, it was nice talking to her after almost a month without seeing her. We got to talk about our internship experience and the project we were working on and how we were both ready to come back to school.

This was one of the assignments I was given by Glen to read and get informed about the California Municipal Laws of open government and ethics, elections, public property, and many more topics. This book gets renewed every year to have everything up to date however, as you can see this isn’t the latest update but it is pretty close to how the California government works today.

One of the first assignments Glen gave me was listening to a couple of podcasts by Radiolab called More Perfect. The reason Glen wanted me to listen to these podcasts was that he wanted me to familiarize myself with the first amendment. This was one of the episodes I listened to called The Most Perfect Album Ep. 1. Listening to this was very helpful because it was an informational podcast about the first amendment.

Glen has invited me to an evening meeting of the Human Relations Commission in the V- room. They call it the V- room because of the shape of the table. In the meeting, they talked about interesting topics such as immigration, homelessness, and marijuana rights/ laws. I even got to present in front of everybody and give a brief introduction about myself and the opportunity we have at High Tech High to participate in an internship. Once the audience heard about internships they were very impressed.

This was the first critique I received on my project from Glen about the project I was working on while I was there. My project consisted of collecting resources and information needed for the immigrant population in Chula Vista. Through his critique, I noticed that he practiced the skills of being kind, specific, and helpful which is highly enforced at High Tech High. When Glen first gave me the critique he said that it might look scary because it was a lot. My mentor was kind enough to walk me through most of the feedback he gave me for me not to have any questions.

This picture was taken my last day at the office, Glen was nice enough to accept to take a picture with me, he even invited his assistant Marissa. Leaving was very sad for me because I would not be able to be an intern at the Attorney’s office anymore. Glen said goodbye and appreciated me for the time I was there, he also gave me a hug before I left.

This is the conference room located in the attorney’s office, it is the closest room to the right from when you walk in. In the conference room, we have meeting such as the attorney staff meeting every Monday. These meetings are used to touch base with everyone and know what events will be happening during the week. These meetings are important because we get clear instructions from Glen who sits in the far back chair.

This was my cubicle at the office, I was located in the far back part of the office. This picture was also taken on one of the first couple of days of internship which is why there wasn’t a lot of materials on my desk. This is where I would spend the majority of the day, the setup of the cubicles was very isolating which made everybody have their own space to work. The cubicles where specifically for the interns so I was surrounded by college students who were also interning at the office.

This was the lanyard I received the second week of internship. Receiving this was very exciting to me because it made it official that I was an intern there. Since the doors automatically locked when you close them, the purpose of this lanyard is to access the doors of the building I was working in.
